Nyle Douglas Gordon was born in Independence Mo. and remained in the Kansas City area throughout most of his childhood. At a very young age Nyle showed great interest in art and was encouraged by family to pursue and practice his skill at drawing and painting. After his sophomore year in high school, Nyle moved with his family to a 250-acre farm in rural northeast Missouri. The wood heated farmhouse required rebuilding, miles of fence needed repair, and there was always wood to be cut, split and stacked for winter. Nyle’s family raised corn, soybeans, cattle, a blue healer named “Jack” and a horse named “Jericho”. On the farm there was plenty of hard work, fresh air and a slower pace that provided an environment for contemplation and much inspiration.

Nyle received his formal training at the University of Central Missouri. While in school, Nyle majored in drawing and painting.

After graduating with a bachelor of fine arts degree, Nyle had the opportunity to work in several different art fields. A couple of the more interesting endeavors were his participation as a sculptor in the renovation of the Kansas State Capital, and his commissioned illustrations of the Missouri State Capital and Governor’s Mansion. He also enjoyed a 10-year career at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City Mo.

In 2004 Nyle left Hallmark to pursue his first love of painting. Nyle has studied seriously and been inspired by the works of many artists past and contemporary. One of the most influential of these artists would be the American artist Robert Henri. Nyle shares Henri’s regard for the enchanting possibilities that children possess as subject matter.

Whether the glance is willful, melancholy, sassy or serene, Nyle’s paintings somehow capture these fleeting moments that we all have been witness to.
Nyle currently resides in Shawnee, Ks. with his wife Kathy who is an elementary school teacher, and 4 of their 7 children.
